The History of EZ2CY®

Development
EZ2CY® was developed by Jeff Smith in 1989. He applied for a patent on October 10, 1989, and the resulting Patent 5,121,703 was issued June 16, 1992. Jeff's love for ocean fishing, boating and canvas/upholstery work contributed to his desire and ultimate ability to develop the product. Jeff found substantial value in listening and relating to the needs of other boaters. He discovered that few canvas shops had truly experienced firsthand the needs associated with an enclosure used in real world and ocean conditions. The need to see while running a boat is imperative and the desire to stay dry and warm is overwhelming. EZ2CY® is the answer to both of these critical needs.

EZ2CY® raised the standards by utilizations of clearer-than-glass Acrylic, Valmex® nautica fabric, lifetime guaranteed thread, and track-to-track installation.  These were new standards set by EZ2CY®.

Customer Service
Beyond the product, there was a need for shops that respected owners and their yachts. A yacht is a very personal item and special care needs to be used when dealing with both. EZ2CY® dealers agree to adhere to high standards for the enclosure as well as treatment of the boat and customer. The license agreement carries severe penalties and even termination for EZ2CY® dealers that do not abide by these standards.

EZ2CY® knows boats and recognizes the unique problems associated with working on them. Boats, by nature, may travel extensively. A boat done in Palm Beach, Florida may travel to Long Island, New York and need additional panels added. Each location patterns, fabricates and installs the EZ2CY® enclosure to ensure the best possible job and attention to the last detail. Additionally, the customer can find comfort in the fact that each EZ2CY® location is required to make a financial and legal commitment to insure that the consumer is protected. These companies have intimate knowledge of the product and you can rest assured that they will be there when you need them.

EZ2CY® Dealers
In 1998, John Bowen, owner of Dockside Canvas in Michigan had a booth in the Miami Boat Show just down the aisle from EZ2CY®. John was displaying a product that was ordained to be the subject of patent litigation with EZ2CY®. However, during the show John gave Jeff his card and asked that they talk in the near future. John ultimately became a Licensed Dealer of EZ2CY®. With John’s stature, experience, and business savvy, he quickly became a mentor to Jeff. With his guidance, dealers doubled in less than a year. Because you cannot become an EZ2CY® dealer by simply reading a brochure and purchasing a panel, this was no small feat!

EZ2CY® Patent
1998 was also the year EZ2CY® initiated litigation to protect its patent. EZ2CY® expended more than $350,000.00 on litigation proving both the strength of its patent and of the Company before reaching a settlement.

Sale of EZ2CY
In 2000 talks began in what transpired to be the sale of EZ2CY® to Monica Leisure and her newly formed company, MAL-MAK. Monica’s business and managerial skills came from working with one of the larger home builders based in Maryland. These skills were a greatly needed and previously missing asset that boosted EZ2CY® to a new level. Monica designated previously elusive time to Jeff for quality control, development of new innovations and continued support to EZ2CY® dealers. Monica’s significance and competence as president have been proven in just a short time and make becoming an EZ2CY® Licensee even more attractive than ever before.

EZ2CY® Grows in Acceptance
EZ2CY® Enclosures continue to grow in acceptance under the direction of Monica and are making an international presence with the Licensing of Craft Coverings in Australia. A look at the Dealer list reveals some of the most respected names in the canvas industry. EZ2CY® is either offered as a standard or an option on a growing list of prominent boat manufactures and has consumers wondering why it is not offered on others. Additionally, EZ2CY® is on a very respectable percentage of boats in most offshore fishing tournaments. The list of repeat customers is consistently growing as is the confidence in and popularity of EZ2CY®.
